Scouts, Museums and Baseball. Oh my!

2011-06-25 15.11.52Last weekend our family traveled with other members of Boy Scout Troop 168 to Texas to go the National Boy Scout Museum and the Texas Rangers vs. New York Mets baseball game.  A group of 50 Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Scouters and parents made the 3.5 hour drive to Dallas.

Typically, our Troop chooses to do something other than camping in July due to the extreme Oklahoma heat. This was our “July” trip rescheduled to June due to a late summer camp slot.  We will be camping in July this year 😦 .

The day began early at the National Scouting Museum in Irving, TX.  I had never been there and it had been five years since the Troop had been.  It was well worth the trip.  Almost everything in the museum was hands on.  All except for the Norman Rockwell and Joseph Csatari collections that is.  There was also something for everyone.  They had a “scavenger hunt/quiz” for each age group/rank for the Scouts that once completed the Scout earned a ribbon to put on their unit flag.  My youngest son and a couple of his buddies from our Pack completed the Webelos quiz.  My daughter and a girl from another Girl Scout Troop also completed the same quiz and turned it in for a ribbon.  The man working at the museum said that he had never had Girl Scouts turn in the quiz.  Way to go Carly and Abi!

In the afternoon we headed out to a the Texas Rangers vs. New York Mets baseball game.  For many of the Scouts it was their first Major League Baseball game and for me it was my first since I was a kid.  The Ballpark at Arlington is quite the stadium.  I am not sure there is a bad view in the place.  The pic above was our view from our seats.  The Mets were on their game that day and beat the Rangers 14-5.  No pitching battle here.  The Scouts had a great time and I think some are baseball fans now.

We ended our day in Texas at one of my favorite places, Dairy Queen!!  There are only 4-5 left in Oklahoma and none less than an hour from our house so driving by one at every exit in Texas was way too tempting.  I will have a blizzard, please and thank you!

It was a great day for the Scouts and families of Troop 168.  Scouting is about getting out and about but not necessarily about camping.  Can’t wait to see what we do next July!
